Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, Ph.D.
is president and founder of A. B. Harvey-Smith
Educational Consulting & Presentations, founded in 1998 to
provide consulting services in education, to business, industry,
and to public and private entities in a variety of educational
areas. Dr. Alicia B. Harvey-Smith is a scholar
and distinguished leader with a proven track record working with
organizations to achieve successful outcomes. She has more
than 15 years of educational experience, with 5 in senior level
administration.
Dr. Harvey-Smith has the distinction
of writing the first dissertation exploring transforming student
development practice using the learning paradigm and transforming
college environments utilizing learning college principles.
This research gave way to new models for examining organizational
change and transformation and a seventh learning college principle,
now being adopted by institutions and organizations to positively
transform practice and institutional cultures impacting the heart of
the organization.
Dr. Harvey-Smith is a passionate and
ethical leader, who sees leadership as a calling to serve. She
holds a senior level position in post-secondary education and is a
seasoned college administrator with a national reputation for
developing highly recognized learning-centered academic and student
development programs, which successfully integrate technology to
enhance program, service and client delivery methods, and conducting
comprehensive assessments to determine program effectiveness.
Alicia has successfully developed systems, to engage and enhance the
learning of diverse organizations in new and creative ways through
integrated partnerships culminating in new models of support.
Alicia has successfully developed and
implemented Student Development and Academic Support Programs across
the country, and has instructed on the middle school, high school
and college levels.
She has delivered numerous presentations and
staff development programs on a wide-variety of academic topics and
has been rated most frequently by participants as, "energetic,
talented, enthusiastic, inspiring, positive, humorous, interactive,
honest, intelligent, caring, full of spirit, a true teacher and
simply a great speaker."
A published author, whose recent works
include: The Seventh Learning College Principle: A Framework For
Transformational Change (NASPA, 2005); The Role of Student
Development In The Learning College in Establishing and Sustaining
Learning-Centered Community Colleges (AACC, 2005); and Growing
Learning Communities at the Community College: Two Decades of
First-Year Student Development Efforts in Integrating The First-
Year Experience: (2004), Alicia is pleased that her research on
transforming organizational cultures through compassion,
appreciation, respect and empowerment is receiving positive
attention nationally.
Dr. Harvey-Smith, has been recognized for
her commitment and leadership and serves on a variety of boards
including The National Board of Advisors for Clark Atlanta
University – Whitney M. Young Jr. School of Social Work,
The National Council on Student Development and has served on the
board for the Council for The Advancement of Standards in Higher
Education.
This innovative consultant is a member of
Phi Delta Kappa, Strathmore's Who's Who and was bestowed the
"Outstanding Woman Of The Year" award, by The Iota Phi Lambda
Sorority, Inc. Kappa Chapter for leadership and community
service and the coveted “Contributor To Knowledge Award" for
leadership and research from The National Council On Student
Development where has served as an Executive Officer, Newsletter
Editor and American Association of Community College's Commission
Appointee to the Commission on Academic, Student and Community
Development.
Dr. Harvey-Smith has taken part in
three of the nations top competitive leadership training institutes,
The Association of Community College Trustee Leadership Academy, The
American Association of Community College Future Leaders Institute
and The American Association of Women In Community Colleges National
Institute of Leadership Development. Dr. Harvey-Smith
has been identified as one who can provide immediate recommendations
and models of best practice for a wide variety of leadership and
educational challenges for a diverse client base.
Dr. Harvey-Smith earned her Ph.D.
from the University Of Maryland, College Park. She holds a
Masters of Science Degree from Johns Hopkins University and a
Bachelors Of Science Degree from Morgan State University.
Alicia resides in Catonsville, Maryland with her husband Donald and
their Rottweiller Othello.
